Trip Highlights

Join us in a unique kayaking adventure south of the border. We'll be exploring the islands of Chiloe, off the port town of Puerto Montt, in Southern Chile and spend our last day hiking in the largest private park/reserve in Chile.

Explore the islands of Chiloe, the rainforests of Pumalin Park, and the breathtaking scenery of Todos los Santos Lake. Sea kayak for 5 days among verdant hill-covered islands following tidal currents and be welcomed by the traditional seafaring Chilote people. Savor mouth watering Chilean cuisine aboard our traditional chilote mother ship. Hike the Pumalin Park temperate rainforest within this unique protected area. Marvel at the towering alerce trees, the South American equivalent to North American redwoods.

Paddle the length of Todos los Santos Lake while gazing up at ice-capped Andean volcanoes. Relax on pristine volcanic beaches each of our 4-night trip while sleeping under southern skies.

The island cluster of Chiloe is an archipelago that is home to second largest island in South America, with 40 smaller islands around it. Chiloe's 150,000 inhabitants, who live on 35 of the islands, have an identity all their own. Myth and folklore are fundamental aspects to their way of life. We will become acquainted with such characters as "el Trauco" and "la Sirena"as we immerse ourselves in the local culture. In these islands, most people live near the sea making a living from subsistence agricuture and selling their internationally celebrated hand-woven crafts.

Our kayaking adventures will take us past stilted traditional palafito houses, delicately propped above the tranquil waters of narrow inlets, and to some of the local villages. There we will explore churches that date back to the 17th and 19th centuries, sites of the last Spanish Colonial Empire stronghold (something which the locals are quick to point out). Sixteen of these churches have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites. Chiloe is truly an island paradise.

No kayaking experience is necessary, though one should be generally fit. We will have a support boat while we are out on the islands and we'll be staying in small hostels and private homes while we kayak. Accommodations will be rustic but comfortable. Our meals will be traditional Chilean fare with lots of fish and wine.
